The M.A. in Hispanic studies presents a comprehensive study of the linguistic, historical, cultural and literary studies in the Hispanic world. The primary focus is upon Latin American language, linguistics, literature, art and culture, but also includes peninsular literature and culture. Much like a traditional M.A. in Spanish, the program focuses on Spanish language, but also will provide the opportunity to study Brazilian Portuguese language and French Francophone culture. Language proficiency is required in Spanish.
M.A. Program in Hispanic Studies
The M.A. in Hispanic studies prescribes a 30-hour program if a thesis is written, or a 36-hour program without thesis. The thesis option includes six credit hours for thesis research and writing along with a mandatory defense of the completed thesis in an oral examination. Students considering further graduate work in a doctoral program are encouraged to enter the thesis program. Non-thesis students are required to pass a comprehensive examination at the conclusion of graduate work. Any request to substitute a course from another program must have approval of the department chair.
The degree program is designed to serve a broad range of students:
those who plan to seek careers in professional fields requiring an understanding of Hispanic culture and fluency in the Spanish language those who plan to teach Spanish at the college level and those who seek the doctorate in Spanish or Hispanic studies.

Generally, all applicants must have an overall undergraduate grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale and a 2.8 on the last 60 hours of undergraduate work. English Language Scores: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score - 79 IBT (Internet-Based) and 550 PBT (Paper-Based); International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score - Overall band 6.5; Pearson Test of English (PTE) score – 53.
