The faculty in the Department of Biology believe that our students should get their hands dirty, grow their minds in the field and engage their curiosity in our high-tech labs. That means even undergraduate students are working right alongside their professors, helping them address cutting-edge questions and further their understanding of the biological world.
Setting careers abloom
Work towards a fulfilling career using your degree in biology with an emphasis on botany. Botanists work for industries and government agencies, as well as teach in the classroom. Become part of the SFA Lumberjack impact on the world as you work to preserve natural resources or utilize plants in the development of life-saving medicines. If your biology degree leads you to a graduate school, you will find yourself well-prepared with a strong academic foundation for further studies as a biological researcher.
Biology majors must fulfill requirements of at least 40 semester hours of biology, in addition to the requirements of the Bachelor of Science degree for the College of Science and Mathematics. Required biology core courses include:
Biology (20 hours): 125, 130, 131, 133, 341 and 470
Botany emphasis
Biology majors choosing to pursue an emphasis in botany complete the following courses:
Physiology/Anatomy (3-4 hours): 401 or 404 Plant diversity (3-4 hours): 351 or 435 Mycology or plant pathology (3 hours): 312 or 424 Advanced elective (3-4 hours): 313, 370, 402, 403 or 431 Major electives (6-8 hours): courses selected in consultation with an academic advisor
