Stephen F. Austin State University’s Bachelor of Science in environmental science is one of the earliest environmental science degree programs established in Texas and provides a solid foundation for a career in the dynamic field of environmental science. The program is jointly supported through the Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture and the College of Sciences and Mathematics. This integrated partnership provides considerable faculty, facility and equipment resources for students.
The curriculum is designed to provide students with the breadth and depth of knowledge needed to understand and address the complex environmental challenges facing modern society. Courses include basic sciences, like biology and chemistry, and applied science subjects like geographic information systems (GIS), soil science and hydrology. Supporting courses in subjects such as environmental law and environmental economics round out the curriculum. Finally, numerous field and laboratory experiences provide students with a hands-on educational experiences not often found in many educational programs.
The program is structured to maintain flexibility and allows students to focus on aspects of the field that are of particular interest to them. The degree program maintains two specialized tracks, each of which provides excellent career opportunities for graduates. The Land and Water Resources Track is a rigorous, science-based curriculum that includes additional coursework options in biology, limnology, microbiology and chemistry, and is an excellent option for students who desire a more science-intensive curriculum. The Discipline Specialization Track allows students to personalize their own curriculum by pursuing individual interests through the selection of an approved minor or second major.
The environmental science degree program at SFA is continuously reviewed and updated to ensure the curriculum maintains its relevance and rigor. To do so, employers and alumni are regularly consulted to ensure the program reflects the needs of this dynamic profession.
