The photography program at SFA blends tradition and technology, preparing students for future careers by helping them develop technical, aesthetic, and professional skills using a wide range of photographic tools.
Photography students have the opportunity explore traditional film and darkroom processes as well as digital image capture and editing software, professional lighting, large-format view cameras, and alternative print processes. Class projects are designed to stimulate creative thinking and image making to address issues of conceptual development, thematic and sequential images, appropriate photographic processes, and the impact of presentation and display. Course instruction focuses not only on print quality and technique, but also on design, composition, and conceptual content.
In addition to in-class instruction, students have opportunities to attend exhibitions and lectures by contemporary artists at the Cole Art Center at the old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches and at Griffith Art Gallery on campus. An active student Photo Club offers frequent activities, including peer workshops, field trips, photo contests, and local exhibition opportunities.
