Drawing is a fundamental component of the Visual Arts and an exciting area of concentration for any artist. At Stephen F. Austin State University’s School of Art, the drawing program begins with a foundational approach. Drawing I (ART 100) and Drawing II (ART 101) focus on topics such as scale, proportion, perspective, composition, value, line, positive/negative space, sighting and measuring. Students explore these topics through individual study as well as group drawing projects. In addition to learning strategies for accurately conveying realism through drawing, students also explore conceptual approaches, working with new materials, processes, and methods.
Drawing III (ART 400/500) introduces drawing the human figure. Life drawing is a classical and integral form of drawing study. Students are introduced to historical master works of figure drawing as well as the work of contemporary figurative artists. Working with professional figure models and our vast collection of classical plaster casts, students pursue an in-depth course of study of the human figure -- studying skeletal and muscular anatomy, gesture, movement, and portraiture.
Expressive Drawing (ART 401/511) explores non-objective, experimental, and conceptual drawing. With an emphasis on experimentation, students create drawing works which push the boundaries of materials and process. Drawing III and Expressive Drawing can be taken multiple times to further develop skills and to experience the myriad approaches of our highly-talented faculty of visual artists.
