Students can earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sustainable Community Development by majoring in the program. The degree is designed to prepare students for a career assisting communities and corporations in the adoption of sustainable practices. A minor in Sustainable Community Development is also available as are an undergraduate certificate in Sustainable Community Development and a graduate certificate in Sustainability.
Sustainable development involves balancing economic prosperity, environmental stewardship and social well-being, also referred to as the "triple bottom line." While many university programs in sustainability focus on application of new technologies or design standards, SFA's program emphasizes sustainability through the humanities and social sciences. The program's curriculum covers a broad range of courses offered by various departments within the College of Liberal and Applied Arts, while also providing valuable hands-on experience through junior or senior year internships.
