The world of theatre design and technology is a rich and fascinating one that involves costumes, makeup, scenery, properties, lighting, sound, and stage management. Because of this diversity in discipline, a study of design and technology at WKU results in not only a specialized skill set, but also an adaptable creativity that expands across disciplines, robustly preparing students to encounter the challenges and artistic opportunities that make a successful career in theatre design and technology.
Lighting and Sound Design
Lighting and Sound design students here at WKU play an integral part of the design process with design possibilities ranging from studio shows, to Main Stage productions, and multiple shows for the Dance Program. The electrics shop, located in the wings of the Russell Miller Theatre, serves as the workplace for student electricians and master electricians. Student technicians will learn the correct and safe way to maintain, hang and focus modern instruments. There will also be opportunities to run computerized lighting boards, computer sound systems, and follow spots for a variety of theatrical productions.
Stage Management
An excellent stage manager is essential to any successful theatre or dance production. Students at WKU learn to work closely with directors, actors, dancers, and designers to help bring about a cohesive work of art. After completing the appropriate course work, students have the opportunity to hone their skills by stage managing one of our many Main Stage and studio productions.
