Toxicologists have the critical responsibility of keeping the public safe from harmful substances found in food, the environment, drugs and other sources. Through research, frequent testing and data collection, toxicologists can help protect and improve the lives of millions.
Offered through St. John’s College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, the 128?credit Bachelor of Science Degree Program in Toxicology provides students with a solid foundation in the theory and practice of the profession. Graduates will be prepared for roles in research and applied aspects of toxicology including biomedical, analytical, occupational and environmental toxicology. The program also qualifies graduates for careers in risk assessment and public health, while strengthening their ability to contribute as citizens as well as scientists.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment opportunities for toxicologists are expected to grow by 8 percent throughout the next decade.
Career Outcomes
The program will prepare graduates to:
- Demonstrate a fundamental competency in applied areas of toxicology: biomedical, occupational, regulatory, risk analysis
- Perform laboratory exercises using modern techniques and equipment
- Explain the missions of federal agencies involved in advancement of public health related to chemical exposure (EPA, FDA, CPSC, OSHA, etc.)
- Communicate risk effectively through oral presentations, written communication, poster presentations, and web presentation
