The critical role educators play in shaping the intellectual and social development of students in their formative years (grades 1-6) is well-documented by experts in the field. Recent studies have shown that elementary school teachers can impact future student success or failure.
The resulting increase in public and government interest in quality education as well as rising enrollment numbers especially in inner cities and rural areas are creating a strong demand for qualified childhood teachers. The Bureau of Labor Statistics forecasts a 13 percent growth rate in employment for childhood educators by 2018.
You can prepare for these opportunities through the 132-133-credit Bachelor of Science in Childhood Education degree program at St. John’s. Offered by The School of Education, this acclaimed program is fully accredited by the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC). Completion of the program entitles students to receive New York State teacher accreditation in Childhood Education. Courses are conveniently offered at both the Queens and Staten Island campuses.
The program provides students with the professional knowledge and skills needed to teach children in the lower grades within an evolving, multicultural and multiethnic society.
Reflecting the University’s Vincentian and Catholic values, emphasis is put on sensitivity to varying cultural values as well as individual learning aptitudes. The program also encourages students to participate in study abroad opportunities to expand their global perspective while giving them a competitive advantage in the job market.
Students who earn their B.S. in Childhood Education will be prepared to
- Instruct students in grades 1 through 6
