More than half of New York speaks Spanish, and the United States has the second largest Spanish-speaking population, after Mexico. A wide variety of career fields – including business, education, medicine, and journalism – seek candidates with Spanish language skills. For this reason, a major or minor in Spanish opens up many opportunities for students once they graduate.
Programs in Spanish offered at St. John’s University prepare graduates to read, write, and speak in Spanish, understand important aspects of Spanish civilization, and become familiar with Spanish literature. All students are encouraged to participate in summer study abroad opportunities in Argentina and Spain, where they can master linguistic, cultural, and social skills in addition to their course work. There are also internships available to students abroad and through local Spanish institutions.
Courses
The Spanish major requires completion of 33 credits in the language.
The requirements for the major consist of the following courses:
- SPA 3090: Masterpieces of Hispanic Literature I
- SPA 3100: Masterpieces of Hispanic Literature II
- SPA 3550: Civilization of Spain
- SPA 3560: Civilization of Spanish America
- SPA 3870: Advanced Spanish Grammar and Composition I
- SPA 3880: Advanced Spanish Grammar and Composition II
- SPA 4990: Capstone Seminar
