If you are a high-achieving student who is sure of your choice of a teaching career, the Bachelor of Science/Master of Teaching (Secondary) is designed to prepare you with the background and skills necessary to enter the teaching profession with confidence and competence. You will become equipped with all the necessary skills to become a registered secondary school teacher, and the foundation skills required to effectively teach subjects which draw on mathematics, science or technology.
What you will study
First year
A typical first year may include:
- core topics in teaching and educational contexts, and middle schooling philosophy and pedagogy
- middle and secondary schooling professional experience placement
- a selection of junior secondary and senior years teaching area topics.
Second year
A typical second year may include:
- a core topic in learners and their development
- middle and secondary schooling professional experience placements
- a selection of junior secondary and senior years teaching area topics.
Third year
A typical third year may include:
- core topics in literacies across the curriculum in the middle and secondary years, numeracy and ICT across the middle and secondary curriculum, and understanding child and adolescent behaviour
- middle and secondary schooling professional experience placements
- a curriculum specialisation option topic
- a selection of junior secondary and senior years teaching area topics.
Fourth and fifth year
A typical fourth and fifth year may include:
- core topics in professional issues in secondary education, teaching Indigenous Australian students, the reflective professional in action, and differentiation and inclusive educational practices
- a curriculum specialisation option topic
- a secondary professional experience assessment for registration
- a senior years teaching area topic
- a topic in approaches to research
- Master of Education option topics
- an independent research study or a dissertation in education.
Your career
This double degree prepares you to be a scientist in a particular field of endeavour and to adapt the scientific skills to a broad range of careers in addition to the teaching profession. Although the majority of education graduates go on to employment as teachers in the public or private sector, some choose to follow other pathways.
