If you are a high-achieving student who is sure of your choice of a teaching career, the Bachelor of General Science/Master of Teaching (Primary R-7) is designed to prepare you with the background and skills necessary to enter the teaching profession with confidence and competence. You will receive the breadth and depth of knowledge necessary to teach in primary schools from reception to year seven, plus the broad foundation skills required to teach science at a primary level.
What you will study
First year
A typical first year may include:
- core topics in teaching and educational contexts, and English curriculum studies
- a Primary R-7 professional experience placement
- a selection of general science option topics.
Second year
A typical second year may include:
- core topics in learners and their development, and mathematics curriculum studies
- Primary R-7 professional experience placements
- a selection of science and general science option topics.
Third year
A typical third year may include:
- core topics in expressive arts curriculum studies, health and physical education curriculum studies, science and design and technology curriculum studies, numeracy and ICT across the curriculum, and understanding child and adolescent behaviour
- Primary R-7 professional experience placements
- a selection of science and option topics.
Fourth and fifth year
A typical fourth and fifth year may include:
- core topics in English curriculum studies, social sciences curriculum studies, teaching Indigenous Australian students, the reflective professional in action, and differentiation and inclusive educational practices
- a Primary R-7 professional experience assessment for registration
- an education option topic and science option topic
- a topic in approaches to research
- Master of Education option topics
- an independent research study or a dissertation in education.
Your career
Although the majority of education graduates go on to employment as teachers in the public or private sector, some choose to follow other pathways. Your Bachelor of General Science will also make you suitable for positions in a range of government and private industry settings.
