A Bachelor of Special Education degree will prepare you to teach secondary school students, including those living with disability and learning or behavioural difficulties.
What you will study
First year
A typical first year may include:
- topics in teaching and educational contexts, and communication and language
- preparation for professional experience placements in secondary school and community settings
- topics contributing to your special education component.
Second year
A typical second year may include:
- topics in learners and their development, and teaching Indigenous Australian students
- 20 days of professional experience placements in secondary school and community settings
- topics contributing to your special education component.
Third year
A typical third year may include:
- topic in relationships for learning
- studies in family and professional partnerships and positive behaviour support
- a topic in contemporary issues in middle schooling
- 25 days of professional experience placements in secondary school and community settings
- topics contributing to your special education component.
Fourth year
A typical fourth year may include:
- topics in case management and assessment
- a topic reflecting on the role of the professional educator
- 40 days of professional experience placements in secondary school and community settings
- topics contributing to your special education component.
Your career
Although the majority of education graduates go on to employment as teachers in the public or private sector, some choose to follow other pathways. The Bachelor of Bachelor of Special Education prepares you for a range of professional roles related to supporting students with disabilities and their families within the broader community.
