Get equipped with the skills to become a registered secondary school teacher. The course is taken as a double degree with a Bachelor of Science, providing you with the foundation skills required to effectively teach subjects which draw on mathematics, science or technology.
This program is also offered by the College of Science and Engineering.
What you will study
First year
A typical first year may include:
- topics in teaching and educational contexts, and secondary schooling philosophy and pedagogy
- preparation for professional experience professional experience placements in secondary school and community settings
- topics contributing to your science component.
Second year
A typical second year may include:
- topics in learners and their development, and teaching Indigenous Australian students
- 20 days of professional experience placements in secondary school and community settings
- topics contributing to your science component.
Third year
A typical third year may include:
- topic in relationships for learning
- studies in curriculum context and development, and literacies across the curriculum
- a topic in contemporary issues in secondary schooling
- 25 days of professional experience placements in secondary school and community settings
- topics contributing to your science component.
Fourth year
A typical fourth year may include:
- topics in differentiation for diverse learners, and numeracy and ICT across the curriculum
- a capstone topic reflecting on the role of the professional educator
- 40 days of practical experience placements in secondary school and community settings
- topics contributing to your science component.
Your career
This double degree prepares you to be a scientist in a particular field of endeavour and to adapt the scientific skills to a broad range of careers in addition to the teaching profession. Although the majority of education graduates go on to employment as teachers in the public or private sector, some choose to follow other pathways.
