Get prepared to teach the key learning areas in primary schools. The course is taken as a double degree with a Bachelor of General Science, providing the broad foundation skills required to teach science at a primary level. You will receive the breadth and depth of knowledge necessary to teach in primary schools from reception to year seven.
This program is also offered by the College of Science and Engineering.
What you will study
First year
A typical first year may include:
- topics in teaching and educational contexts, and English curriculum studies
- preparation for professional experience placements in primary school and community settings
- topics contributing to your general science component.
Second year
A typical second year may include:
- topics in learners and their development, mathematics curriculum studies, and teaching Indigenous Australian students
- 30 days of professional experience placements in primary school and community settings
- topics contributing to your general science component.
Third year
A typical third year may include:
- topic in relationships for learning
- curriculum studies for arts, health and physical education, numeracy and ICT, and science, design and technology
- 25 days of professional experience placements in primary school and community settings
- topics contributing to your general science component.
Fourth year
A typical fourth year may include:
- topic in differentiation for diverse learners
- curriculum studies for English and social sciences
- a capstone topic reflecting on the role of the professional educator
- 40 days of professional experience placements in primary school and community settings
- topics contributing to your general science component.
Your career
Although the majority of education graduates go on to employment as teachers in the public or private sector, some choose to follow other pathways. Your Bachelor of General Science will also make you suitable for positions in a range of government and private industry settings.
