If you are a high-achieving student who is sure of your choice of a teaching career, the Bachelor of Arts/Master of Teaching (Secondary) is designed to prepare you with the background and skills necessary to enter the teaching profession with confidence and competence. You will become equipped with all the necessary skills to become a registered secondary school teacher, and receive a comprehensive, liberal education for all new teachers.
What you will study
First year
A typical first year may include:
- core topics in academic and professional communication, teaching and educational contexts, and middle schooling philosophy and pedagogy
- middle and secondary schooling professional experience placement
- a selection of teaching major topics
- a selection of BA major and elective topics
Second year
A typical second year may include:
- a core topic in learners and their development
- middle and secondary schooling professional experience placements
- a selection of teaching major topics
- a selection of major topics from the BA
Third year
A typical third year may include:
- core topics in literacies across the curriculum in the middle and secondary years, numeracy and ICT across the middle and secondary curriculum, and understanding child and adolescent behaviour
- middle and secondary schooling professional experience placements
- a curriculum specialisation topic
- a selection of teaching major topics
- a selection of BA major topics
Fourth and fifth year
For students continuing on to a Master of Teaching (Primary R-7), a typical fourth and fifth year might include:
- core topics in professional issues in secondary education, teaching Indigenous Australian students, the reflective professional in action, and differentiation and inclusive educational practices
- a secondary professional experience assessment for registration
- a curriculum specialisation topic
- a BA major topic
- Master of Education option topics
- a topic in approaches to research
- an independent research study or a dissertation in education
Your career
Although the majority of education graduates go on to employment as teachers in the public or private sector, some choose to follow other pathways.
