If you are a high-achieving student who is sure of your choice of a teaching career, the Bachelor of Arts/Master of Teaching (Early Childhood) is designed to prepare you with the background and skills necessary to enter the teaching profession with confidence and competence. It equips you with all the practical and theoretical skills required to educate and nurture children from birth to eight years, and provides a comprehensive, liberal education for all new teachers.
What you will study
First year
A typical first year may include:
- core topics in academic and professional communication; teaching and educational contexts; and play, learning and development
- an early childhood professional experience placement
- a selection of major, minor and elective topics from the BA.
Second year
A typical second year may include:
- core topics in the expressive arts in early childhood, and literacy and numeracy
- early childhood professional experience placements
- a selection of major and minor topics from the BA.
Third year
A typical third year may include:
- core topics in language, literature and literacies, pedagogies of belonging, numeracy and multiliteracies in design and technology, health and physical education in early childhood, and thinking and working mathematically
- early childhood professional experience placements
- a selection of BA major topics.
Fourth and fifth year
For students continuing on to a Master of Teaching (Early Childhood), a typical fourth and fifth year might include:
- core topics in thinking and working scientifically in the early years, curriculum and pedagogy in the early years, critical pedagogies for a changing world, teaching Indigenous Australian students, and the reflective professional in action
- an early childhood professional experience final assessment
- Master of Education option topics
- a topic in approaches to research
- an independent research study or a dissertation in education
Your career
Although the majority of education graduates go on to employment as teachers in the public or private sector, some choose to follow other pathways.
Potential occupations include:
- early childhood teacher
- youth and children’s support officer
- language literacy and numeracy teacher/assessor.
