Prepare for a career teaching dance in postsecondary and professional education settings such as studios, community colleges, outreach programs, after-school programs, and community centers. This program is ideal for established dancers and choreographers wishing to develop pedagogy and research skills as a complement to their artistry, as well as those currently teaching pre-K–12 who want to deepen their knowledge of theory and practice.
Through your research in dance education and both general and subject-specific pedagogy courses, you’ll learn:
- How to examine dance through a pedagogic lens to select and apply teaching and learning processes appropriate to various settings and populations
- How to critically evaluate, review, and put into practice varying educational models in order to develop your own teaching philosophies and skills
- How to research methods to examine existing bases of information and create new knowledge in the field
- How to develop pedagogical skills to promote and nurture artistic exploration and expression
- How to develop pedagogies for culturally relevant contexts and culturally diverse students
You’ll gain professional development in the theory and practice of dance education, with an emphasis on the historical and cultural contexts from which to teach dance.
As a graduate student in this program, you will examine dance for the purpose of developing as a research-informed and proficient teacher who possesses a balance between pedagogy, artistry, and research. A final research project is the culmination of the degree.
You can complete this degree in just three terms (including summer) as a full-time student. Upon graduation, you’ll be well prepared for your career as an innovative educator, or for advancement into doctoral study.
