As an innovative science teacher in the area of biology, chemistry, earth science, or physics, you'll inspire your middle and high school students to take a deeper interest in the world, help them examine and understand natural phenomena, and encourage aptitudes that can lead to careers in science, teaching, or research. Upon graduating you’ll be eligible for initial teaching certification in New York.
What You’ll Learn You’ll combine liberal arts courses in the humanities and social sciences, core content knowledge in a scientific discipline – biology, chemistry, earth science, or physics – and pedagogical course work focused on:
Methods for teaching science and developing curricula for junior and senior high school students Methods for adapting curricula for multicultural urban schools How to apply technology in the teaching and learning of science Instructional techniques and strategies for engaging more women and minorities in science
This program leads to eligibility for initial teaching certification in grades 7–12 in New York, and also permits you to teach science to grades 5 and 6.
Upon graduation, you’ll be prepared for careers including:
- Teacher of science in middle and high schools, grades 7–12, and in elementary schools, grades 5 and 6
- Science curriculum specialist, developer, or evaluator
- Science program coordinator in schools and school districts
- Science artist and illustrator for children's books
- Instructor at museums, halls of science, and zoos
