Teach middle and high school students the mathematical skills they need for success. You’ll build a strong foundation of mathematics, learn pedagogical strategies, and gain hands-on experience through supervised student teaching placements at New York City public middle and high schools. Upon graduation, you’ll be eligible for initial teaching certification in Teaching Mathematics, grades 7–12, in New York State.
What you'll learn

You’ll take liberal arts, mathematics, and computer science courses in NYU's College of Arts and Science, and teaching methods and curriculum courses at NYU Steinhardt. Throughout your course work, you will learn:
- Pedagogical and core content knowledge in teaching mathematics in grades 7–12
- Skills and strategies for teaching mathematics at the middle and secondary school levels
- Approaches for working with adolescent learners in middle and high schools
- Issues of gender and ethnicity in mathematics education
- Strategies to help underrepresented students surmount learning barriers
This program leads to eligibility for initial teaching certification in Teaching Mathematics, grades 7–12, in New York State. You’ll also be qualified to teach mathematics in grades 5 and 6, and be ready to take on careers such as:
- Teacher of mathematics in middle and high schools
- Mathematics curriculum specialist, coordinator, or evaluator in middle and high schools
- Mathematics education specialist in government agencies, nongovernmental organizations, and multinational corporations
