Prepare for dual teacher certification in New York State as you master core subjects in mathematics, social studies, science, and language arts, with a focus on how children learn at different developmental stages. You will be prepared to teach in general education or special education settings, as well as early intervention, home-based, day care, and other infant/toddler programs.
What You’ll Learn You’ll combine a liberal arts core in areas such as history, literature, science, and mathematics with courses on human development, educational foundations, and inquiry-based education to ensure that you have a robust foundation, learning:
A firm knowledge of human development and variability in development How to develop learning environments to meet the diverse needs of students Skills to provide young learners with rich, child-centered educational environments
Career Opportunities
This dual-certification program leads to eligibility for New York State initial teaching certification in Early Childhood and Early Childhood Special Education (birth–grade 2). Upon graduation, you’ll be prepared for a number of careers, including:
- Lead or team teacher in general education, inclusive education, and segregated special education settings
- Elementary school supervisor, counselor, librarian, or administrator
- Curriculum specialist or staff developer in early childhood education programs
- Resource room, itinerant, assistant, or consulting teacher
- Inclusion coordinator
- Social service agency caseworker
- After-school director
- Children's book editor or children's television producer
