The Center for European and Mediterranean Studies (CEMS) offers an interdisciplinary major and minor in European and Mediterranean studies focusing on contemporary patterns of politics, culture, and society, as well as on historical developments in Europe and the European-Mediterranean region. Majors may choose to write a senior honors thesis, involving one-on-one research with CEMS faculty. Advanced knowledge of a European language and a semester of study in one of NYU’s European-based sites are required of all majors to help ensure acquirement of a deeper understanding of the culture and institutions of a country in the European or Mediterranean region.
Although open to all students, the minor is especially suited to majors in European languages, history, or the social sciences.
