Designed for students interested in all facets of design and production, including aesthetics, theory, history, literature, graphics, technology, and crafts.
As a program that only offers a BFA degree, we are solely focused on educating undergraduate students. Design & Production core courses cover all facets of design and production, including aesthetics, theory, history, literature, graphics, management, technology and crafts. Design & Production majors work as stage managers, shop assistants and technicians for U-M productions in theatre, dance, musical theatre, and opera, and our talented students may design costumes, sets, or lighting for these productions.
The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Design & Production requires a minimum of 120 credits: coursework is 68% within SMTD and 32% within the liberal arts. Development of skills is systematic and disciplined, and opportunities to explore individual creativity are continuous. Academic and studio classes are augmented with practical experience in our professional production shops. Theatre production activities are completely integrated with curricular programs and are a vital part of training at U-M.
SMTD coursework includes:

Liberal Arts coursework includes:
Freshman Writing , Shakespeare’s plays, Upper-level writing, Art History, Foreign language or tested proficiency, Natural, Physical and/or Social Science, and Cognate courses related to the student’s field of specialization; these could include courses in architecture, art, art history, computer science, film & video, engineering, language, mathematics, or psychology.
