專業(yè)概況
在這里學(xué)什么?
The Field of Soil and Crop Sciences occupies a modern and diversified agronomic research facility. An air-conditioned, eleven-story research tower and adjoining wings incorporate fully equipped laboratory, teaching, office, and supporting spaces. Growth chambers and greenhouses are on the campus, and there are three main field stations near Ithaca.
Many of the faculty members have research programs concerning international agricultural and environmental issues in tropical and subtropical regions. A limited number of students can do most or all of their research overseas. In addition, the M.P.S.(A.L.S.) program has a Peace Corps option in which the student undertakes two semesters of academic work at Cornell and a Peace Corps assignment.
Field Crop Science covers a wide spectrum, from field-scale applied projects to cell physiology and biotechnology. Studies seek to improve crop productivity and quality, both nationally and internationally, and to identify physiological factors that could be improved through plant breeding or genetic engineering.
Soil Science focuses on the processes and properties of the soil environment. It emphasizes improving the suitability of soil for crop growth while preserving its value as a natural resource by using ecologically sound approaches.
Environmental Information Science includes a new specialization in Geospatial Applications. The specialization in Geospatial Applications features coursework designed to equip students with knowledge and tools to collect and analyze geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing data. There is a growing demand for students with advanced geospatial modeling and analysis skills to manage and interpret vast quantities of information. Graduates seek employment in a wide range of sectors, including agriculture, government agencies, consulting, public health organizations, financial institutions, private industry and not-for-profit entities, providing location intelligence for decision-making.
Learning Outcomes
Students in the MPS program participate in an engaged learning series designed to promote professional development and facilitate students’ career transitions after graduation. Workshops cover a wide array of topics related to career skill set development, including resume building, personal narrative development, mock interviews, effective team leadership, plus industry and Cornell Alumni networking events.
