專業(yè)概況
在這里學(xué)什么?
Majoring in Plant Sciences will help you make a positive difference in the world. Plant science expertise is needed to address many of our most challenging problems:
- Producing enough food for a growing world population.
- Breeding plants to tolerate the heat- and drought-stress caused by climate change.
- Developing sustainable cropping practices to produce healthful and nutritious food.
- Investigating new methods to fight plant diseases.
- Restoring damaged ecosystems to better support those who live there.
- Conserving species, through plant collections in gardens and arboretums, for future generations.
Curriculum
Students who major in Plant Sciences must complete coursework for the college and program that includes approximately two years of “core” or foundational coursework, plus the required coursework in at least one concentration; develop an ePortfolio; and engage in an out-of-classroom experience related to the major. Core coursework in biology, chemistry, statistics and plant biology should be completed as early as possible, and transfer students should complete most of these courses before matriculating at Cornell.
The current requirements are considered the minimum for a well-rounded foundation in plant science. Students interested in pursuing a scientific career or graduate education is encouraged to take biochemistry, calculus and physics as electives, over and above the core requirements.
Concentrations
- Ecology of Managed Landscapes concentration (Ecology)
- Organic Agriculture (Organics)
- Plant Breeding & Genetics concentration (Breeding)
- Plant Computational Biology concentration (Big Data)
- Plant Evolution and Systematics concentration (Evolution)
- Plant Molecular, Cellular & Developmental Biology concentration (Physiology)
- Plant Pathology & Plant-Microbe Biology concentration (Plant Diseases)
- Plants and Human Health concentration (Medicinal Plants)
- Soil Science concentration (Soils)
- Sustainable Plant Production concentration (Sustainability)
- Design Your Own Concentration (DYOC)
Careers
The Cornell Plant Sciences major prepares students for careers or further study in areas related to research or teaching about plants, growing plants as food or fiber (field crops, vegetables, fruit or vineyards) or other purposes (turfgrass, ornamental plant production, urban horticulture), pest management, plant breeding, plant pathology and plant protection.
