The Master’s in Mathematics is a 30 semester-hour program that is offered in five areas of concentration: Mathematics, Applied Statistics, Data Analytics, Actuarial Mathematics, and Teaching College Mathematics. Each concentration includes specific requirements, and all course work must be approved by the DGS.
Each student, together with their advisor, must submit a Master’s Plan of Study to The Graduate School by the end of second semester. The plan must include all courses the student is expected to complete as a minimum requirement, including courses required for the major, supporting courses, number of elective hours, and capstone experience, as well as all courses required by the department but not counted toward the degree, including prerequisite courses.
The following restrictions on credits are placed on all MA degrees by The Graduate School.
- No more than 6 credit hours of independent study.
- No more than six credit hours of credit evaluated as C+ (2.3) and/or C (2.0) applied toward the minimum credits required for the degree.
- Credit earned for STA 667 Statistical Consulting is not applicable to a graduate Plan of Study.
- The master’s curriculum, including the thesis, must be completed within five academic years, from the date the first courses carrying graduate degree credit applicable to the student’s program are begun.
Thesis
The thesis option is available for concentrations in Mathematics, Applied Statistics, or Data Analytics. Students selecting this option must find a thesis advisor and a thesis committee from the graduate faculty prior to completing the Plan of Study. The thesis committee, chaired by the thesis advisor, consists of two other members of the graduate faculty. The committee must be approved by the Department Head. The student must include either 6 hours of MAT 699, 6 hours of STA 699, or 3 hours each of STA 698 and STA 699 in the required hours as indicated in the master’s plan of study and completes a thesis based on investigation of a topic in their chosen concentration.

Non-native speakers of English must validate proficiency in the English language by one of three means: TOEFL: 79 (paper-based 550); IELTS: 6.5 Band Score; PTE: 67; and ELS: 112.
