We prepare educators to serve as change agents in their schools and communities by promoting the full participation of individuals with disabilities.
We help students develop strategies and new ways of thinking in a wide variety of contexts, with particular emphasis on working within a multicultural and urban context.
The Exceptional Education master’s degree is a 30-credit degree, with 12 core credits required in all focus areas. The required credits are:
- 3 credits EXCEDUC 715 Issues and Trends.
- 3 credits EXCEDUC 770 Research Course.
- 3 credits EXCEDUC 890 Thesis/Research Course.
- 3 credits Advanced Issues or Methods in Urban Special Education (determined in collaboration with a faculty advisor).
To fill the remaining credits, students complete the master’s degree in Exceptional Education as a teaching certification focus or individual focus.
Individual Focus Option
If you are not seeking a post-baccalaureate teaching certification through the Exceptional Education master’s degree, you must select one of the following focus areas:
- Assistive Technology
- Transition from School to Life
- Literacy and Learning Disabilities
- Multicultural Special Education
- Students with Significant Disabilities
- Early Intervention/Early Childhood
- Early Intervention/Deaf and Hard of Hearing
- Teacher as Leader
The Master’s degree in Exceptional Education is not a stand-alone teacher certification or licensure program. This Master’s degree can be completed in conjunction with a post-baccalaureate teacher certification program.

為來自中國的學(xué)生設(shè)計(jì) Applicants for admission to the UWM Graduate School must have the following: A baccalaureate degree or its equivalent as determined by the UWM Centre on International Education, from a regionally accredited institution, completed before the first term of enrolment in the Graduate School. Students applying to approved integrated bachelor’s/master’s programs are exempt from this requirement, A minimum cumulative undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale, or an equivalent measure on a grading system that does not use a 4.0 scale. TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) results with a minimum required score of 79 on the Internet-based TOEFL (IBT) and a minimum recommended sub-score of 18 in each skill). IELTS (International English Language Testing System) results with a minimum required score of 6.5, with minimum recommended sub-score of 6.0 in each skill.
