In HG. Wells’ classic, War of the Worlds, the novel ends with the narrator in a war-torn London, where he stumbles upon the remains of an alien race whose invasion is stopped in its tracks thanks to none other than earth’s tiniest organisms. Although in this story they saved the day by affecting only the aliens, they are also capable of having profound effects on the earth’s inhabitants as well. If you’re interested in separating the science from the science fiction and studying the real way these microbes interact with their environments, then you may wish to major in microbiology.
UTSA’s Microbiology & Immunology Program
UTSA’s Microbiology & Immunology degree blends the disciplines of genetics, organic chemistry and cellular biology to examine and analyze microscopic organisms like bacteria, viruses, algae, fungi and parasites. Through extensive coursework and lab experience, you’ll acquire the microbiology skills necessary to grow, identify and control various types of microorganisms—even the ones that healthcare professionals find most concerning!
