Those master's students starting the program must speak Spanish at an upper intermediate level, which will be judged in an interview with the members of the Spanish section. Upon graduation, students must speak at the advanced level, which will be judged with an OPI.
In order to defend the master's thesis and thus graduate, all students registered in the Spanish Master's program must: (i) attend certain classes requirements and complete a minimum of 30 credits within the program and a minimum of 36 in total *, (ii) pass a pedagogical exam, (iii) pass a content exam of their classes and the OPI interview and (iv) have completed an Academic Portfolio.
REQUIRED CLASSES
FIRST YEAR
- Minimum hours = 9 credits per semester (18 total minimum)
- SPAN 5900 Pedagogy (3 credits): take both semesters
- SPAN 4310 Introduction to Hispanic Linguistics (3)
- SPAN 4200 Introduction to Research (3)
- One class of those recommended outside the department (3)

A cumulative minimum GPA of 3.0 on previous coursework is required for full admission (3.25 for interdisciplinary program applicants). Proof of English Proficiency: A minimum score of 540 on the written exam, or 76 on the Internet-based test; IELTS: A minimum score of 6.0 is required for admission.
