The University of Wyoming’s History Department offers graduate students the opportunity to work with internationally recognized faculty in an array of specializations and methodologies, with special concentration in the American West in a global context. In addition to our strengths in United States, U.S. Western and Native American history, we offer coursework covering Modern Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and Central and East Asia. This wide range of expertise makes the University of Wyoming an ideal place for students to explore comparative themes in social, cultural and global history.
M.A. students at the University of Wyoming have access to full funding opportunities through Graduate Assistantships, research grants, and other sources.
Candidates for the Master of Arts degree in History are required to complete a minimum of 31 hours of graduate (5000) level credit. Students must complete 27 hours of coursework, with at least 24 hours in history. This will include:
- History 5880, History Theory.
- 12 hours of history course work in 5000-level, non-dual-listed courses (excluding HIST 5880).
- 4 hours of thesis research (HIST 5960).
- Students must demonstrate a reading knowledge of a foreign language appropriate to their research. In special cases, other relevant historical tools may substitute for the language requirement upon approval of the thesis adviser and the Graduate Coordinator.

A cumulative minimum GPA of 3.0 on previous coursework is required for full admission (3.25 for interdisciplinary program applicants). Proof of English Proficiency: A minimum score of 540 on the written exam, or 76 on the Internet-based test; IELTS: A minimum score of 6.0 is required for admission.
