Our mission is to promote human development through education, research and service that advance the professions of, and scholarship in, counseling and higher education. Our vision is to seek local, state, regional, national and international prominence as a collaborative and transformative community engaged in exemplary research, education and service that benefit the professions of counseling and higher education, the publics they serve and humanity at large.
The Program in Higher Education supports the College of Education’s mission to improve education and promote human development by providing learners with academic experiences and diverse perspectives which challenge their creativity and intellect and integrate knowledge, professional competence, experience and imagination to develop researchers and practitioners who serve as effective leaders in institutions of higher education.
The Higher Education Program offers degrees in three program tracks: Student Affairs, Community College Leadership, and General Administration.
The Program also offers three formats for the degree: standard, cohort, and online. The standard program allows student to enroll in courses full or part-time in any of the tracks, with no specific sequence. With the Master's Cohort in Student Affairs, students enroll in a full-time sequence of courses in the student affairs track over a two-year period. They also hold graduate assistant positions in the UNT Division of Student Affairs. Full-time and part-time higher education students in the standard format master's program and the doctoral programs may be considered for graduate assistantships in student affairs and other areas of higher education administration.
The master of education degree requires a minimum of 36 semester hours in four areas: higher education core (15 hours), research (3 hours), internship/field problem (6 hours) and specialization (12 hours including 3 hours of elective).
