The Department of Emergency Management and Disaster Science at the University of North Texas offers the nation’s first and most respected Bachelor of Science degree in Emergency Administration and Planning (EADP). Floods, tornadoes, hazardous materials spills, terrorist attacks and epidemics are among the many hazards professionals plan for in this field.
Emergency managers help communities build resilience through adequate preparation, well-coordinated disaster response and sustainable recovery. Graduates typically find careers in government agencies, private businesses and non-profit or humanitarian organizations. Employment opportunities may be found as a:
- Business continuity specialist
- Corporate risk management director
- Disaster coordinator for volunteer organizations
- Floodplain manager
- Hazardous materials specialist
- Local, state or federal emergency management officer
EADP courses provide foundational knowledge of emergency preparedness, response and mitigation. Additional courses include practical methods, EOC design and operations, social vulnerability and a senior capstone seminar. Electives have more specific focuses, such as:
