The Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Literacy Studies at The University of Texas at Arlington is a program that specializes in advanced coursework designed to meet a variety of professional goals that address the literacy-learning needs of all students. The M.Ed. in Literacy Studies is a 30-credit hour, fully online, non-thesis Master’s degree that prepares Texas graduates for Reading Specialist, TESOL, and Master Reading Teacher certifications.
Reading Specialist — This is an advanced certification that teachers may add to their existing credential upon completion of two year's teaching experience and a master's degree. Once recommended for the Reading Specialist program from UTA, students may also apply for the Master Reading Teacher (MRT) certificate without the additional MRT exam. English as a Second Language — In Texas, ESL is an add-on certificate that individuals with an initial teaching certificate can add to their existing credential with four specifically designed graduate courses focused on English Language Learners. Students are prepared to work with English learners and struggling readers, as well as to take leadership roles within their districts. Master Reading Teacher (MRT) — The MRT Certification provides teachers with the tools to facilitate research-based instruction by communicating and collaborating with all educational stakeholders; mentoring and coaching with colleagues; providing professional development for faculty; and making decisions designed to identify and assist students with reading disabilities. Other opportunities include Reading Specialist, ESL, Instructional Specialist and Literacy Coach.

Applicants are expected to submit a score of at least 550 on the paper-based TOEFL, a score of at least 213 on the computer-based TOEFL, a minimum score of 6.5 on the IELTS, or a minimum TOEFL iBT total score of 79.
