Program Description
The joint M.A. /Ph.D. in history are an innovative doctoral program focusing on transnational and comparative history. Students pursue both coursework and research not only at CMU but also at one of our international partner institutions in Germany, Mexico, Scotland or England. A central feature of the joint program is the requirement that students spend a minimum of one academic year at a partner institution. Ordinarily taken in the second year of a student's course of study, this year abroad offers the chance to take coursework in an international setting, work closely with international faculty and colleagues and begin the pursuit of dissertation research.
In keeping with the program's focus, doctoral dissertations produced by our students are required to address transnational and/or comparative history. Recognizing that both "transnational" and "comparative" cover diverse approaches to the past, the department offers advanced training in a wide range of both major and minor fields, including all periods of human history around the globe and a variety of thematic specializations.
Research Opportunities and Assistantships
The program's requirement that students study abroad in the second year represents a unique opportunity to study internationally at an early phase of the program, when students in traditional programs are completing MA or basic requirements on their home campus. Special agreements with partner institutions give our students the chance to complete these basic requirements while also pursuing research in foreign archives and libraries.

English language requirements: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): A score of 500 PBT/61 IBT is required for conditional admission or 550 PBT/79 IBT for regular admission. International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic Module: A score of 5.5 required for conditional admission or 6.5 for regular admission. Pearson Test of English, Academic Module: A score of 44 for conditional admission or 53 for regular admission. International Baccalaureate (IB): A grade of 5 in English at the Higher Level is required for regular admission. Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB): A score of 69 is required for conditional admission or 77 for regular admission. ELS Language Center Program: Completion of Level 112 for regular admission. ELI (CMU English Language Program): Successful ELI completion and recommendations for regular admission.
