The Department of Computer Science offers a major in Information Technology in the BA and BS degrees. Information technology graduates will find a variety of career opportunities, including network administration, database administration, web master, application system designer, multimedia specialist, and customer service technologist.
The major consists of 42 semester hours of computer science and information technology, 6-7 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, and 3 semester hours of professional communications.
Program Educational Objectives: Graduates of the information technology program are expected to engage in the following activities within the first five years after graduation:
- Graduates will contribute to their chosen profession, developing a reputation for solving complex problems.
- Graduates will engage in lifelong learning activities in computer science or related fields.
- Graduates will conduct themselves in a professional, responsible and ethical manner in their chosen profession.
- Graduates will demonstrate a commitment to teamwork, communicating effectively with others from diverse backgrounds.
Student Outcomes: By the time of graduation, students in the information technology program will have:
- An ability to analyze a complex computing problem and to apply principles of computing and other relevant disciplines to identify solutions.
- An ability to design, implement, and evaluate a computer-based solution to meet a given set of computing requirements in the context of the discipline.
- An ability to communicate effectively in a variety of professional contexts.
- An ability to recognize professional responsibilities and make informed judgments in computing practice based on legal and ethical principles.
- An ability to function effectively as a member or leader on a team engaged in activities appropriate to the discipline.
- An ability to identify and analyze user needs and to take them into account in the selection, creation, integration, evaluation, and administration of computing-based systems.

English language requirements: Test of English as a Foreign Language (minimum score of 550 PBT, 213 CBT, or 79 IBT), International English Language Testing System (minimum score of 6.5), Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (minimum score of 77), Pearson Test of English (minimum score of 53), ELS Language Center Program: Completion of Level 112.
