As a school counselor, you help students work through a wide variety of issues, overcome serious obstacles, and make decisions that will influence their future for years to come.
The counseling and counselor education program will help you develop the exceptional skills in counseling practice, consultation, leadership, and outreach you need to thrive in any setting.
Our urban focus emphasizes the achievement gap between students based on socioeconomic background and race or ethnicity. You will graduate ready to work cooperatively with parents, teachers, administrators, and others in the pursuit of optimal development for all students.
Counselor education program goals
When you graduate from the counselor education master's program, you will be a reflective practitioner who continues the process of self-critique and self-improvement throughout your professional life.
You will also:

- Know and apply ethical counseling principles
- Understand and apply research findings
- Counselor Education program highlights
The Counselor Education program requires you to complete 48 credit hours—but not all of them will be in the classroom.
You will have the opportunity to participate in a number of field experiences designed to meet your academic and career goals. You'll also complete a practicum or internship in the location and environment of your choosing.
Throughout the program, you'll learn from a diverse, highly experienced faculty dedicated to improving education in urban environments.
