The Periodontics Graduate Program at Indiana University is a 36 month program that offers a Master's of Science in Dentistry (MSD) Degree and a Certificate in Periodontics. Students also have a minor course of study, usually in Oral Pathology. The program consists of six full semesters and two summer sessions. A comprehensive curriculum has been developed so that on completion the student will have attained the knowledge and skills necessary for successful clinical practice, or a position in academics or research.
To prepare periodontal graduate students who will be proficient in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the supporting and surrounding tissues of the teeth or their substitutes; the replacement of lost teeth and their supporting structures by grafting or implanting natural and synthetic devices and materials; and, the maintenance of the health, function, comfort and aesthetics of these structures and tissues.
Goals and Objectives
To provide scientific knowledge for the acquisition of diagnostic and therapeutic skills involved in clinical periodontics and implant dentistry.
To develop skills for the critical evaluation of the dental literature, research, and new therapeutic techniques.
To apply this knowledge and these skills effectively to the diagnosis and therapy involved in clinical periodontics and implant dentistry.
To recognize other oral health and systemic problems and integrate their treatment into periodontal therapy and implant dentistry.
To develop a general understanding of the theory and methods of performing research.
To provide instructional skills that will enable graduates to effectively communicate knowledge of periodontics, oral medicine, and related subjects to their patients and in an academic environment.
To foster the concept of lifelong learning, professional growth, and professional service to their patients and community.
To prepare students who are educationally qualified and motivated to successfully challenge the qualifying and certifying examinations of the American Board of Period ontology and become Diplomats of the Board.
