The orthodontic program covers 24 calendar months with classes beginning in July and end in July of the second year. If requirements are not completed it is necessary to remain as an officially registered student until completion of the requirements.
A Certificate in Orthodontics is awarded upon successful completion of all required didactic and clinical program requirements. This is a combined certificate and degree; there is no option for a clinical certificate only.
- All students are required to purchase a laptop computer. Information on purchase of the computer will be sent upon acceptance to the program.
This graduate program is offered for the dentist wishing to specialize in the field of orthodontics. The primary objectives of the courses are:
- To develop an appreciation of optimal occlusion in the broadest sense with special considerations given to function, stability, and esthetics.
- To gain a thorough knowledge of the dent-facial complex with reference to anatomical structure, variation and growth and development, and their demonstration by analytic methods.
- To develop an awareness of soft and hard tissue changes during growth and repair, and understand the response of these tissues to local and systemic influences including mechanical therapy.
- To acquire an understanding of the principles and materials involved in the bio-mechanics of treatment and proficiency in the techniques involved.
A MSD (Master of Science in Dentistry) degree is conferred upon the satisfactory completion of a research project, including successful defense of a thesis or manuscript and a minimum residency of 24 months. Minimum School of Dentistry requirements for the MSD degree include 30 hours of didactic and clinical coursework. A minimum of 6 hours must be earned toward an approved minor subject outside the major concentration. Other elective subjects may be selected, based on the student's educational objectives. A total of 6 hours must be in research; additional research credit cannot be used toward fulfillment of requirements for the degree.
