Healthcare Engineering Technology Management is a program that focuses on the safe and effective use of medical equipment in the clinical setting. Almost all graduates work in hospitals as members of the patient care team, supporting medical staff as they utilize technology for diagnosis and treatment. The focus of the curriculum is on the electronics and networking integral to the myriad of devices and systems critical to contemporary healthcare.
Overview
IUPUI (a campus of Purdue University and Indiana University) is offering a Bachelor's Degree (BS) in Healthcare Engineering Technology Management. The degree has a focus on the practice of medical equipment support in the clinical environment. The degree can build on a person's associate's degree and many courses are available at a distance. Purdue University grants the degree.
This program will address a growing need for engineering technicians in the clinical environment who can support the rapidly expanding use of technology in patient care. The students will integrate the technical/electrical/computer aspects of medical equipment with the needs of the medical staff and patients. Graduates will be an integral member of the health care team, demonstrating excellent problem solving skills blended with an emphasis on customer service toward the medical staff to result in safe and effective patient care.
For students who do not have experience or training in the discipline, this degree cannot be earned without attending classes in Indianapolis.
Program Educational Objectives
The program educational objective of our department is to produce graduates who will hold these attributes, as measured in the early years of their careers following graduation:
- Obtain and advance professionally in technical and multidisciplinary positions that require collaboration and customer service, successfully supporting the use of technology in healthcare
- Achieve recognition and/or advancement consistent with education
- Continue growth in professional knowledge through additional education, certification, or specialized training
HEMT Student Outcomes:
At the time of graduation, a student will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge and skills in the use of the electrical and/or computer components of medical equipment systems as encountered in the degree program's courses. Demonstrate a working medical vocabulary and knowledge of clinical safety requirements and regulations as encountered in the courses of the degree program.
- Use current knowledge of mathematics, science, and emerging technology tools to solve problems and demonstrate solutions.
- Identify, analyze, and integrate the technical equipment requirements with the needs of medical staff and patients as required in the courses of the degree program.
- Apply and design solutions for issues identified in health care technology as demonstrated in a senior project.
- Conduct, analyze, and interpret experiments, and assess results.
- Function as a member of a 2-4 person team to complete a task in a timely manner. Demonstrate ability to organize work done by team members.
- Write technical reports; present data and results coherently in oral and graphic formats, etc.

We look for applicants who have demonstrated a "B" average or above average grades, with strong grades in math and science. TOEFL (iBT) – 60; IELTS – 5.5; IUPUI Program for Intensive English (PIE) score of Level 5; GCSE or GCE O Level in English language score of Grades A-C; International Baccalaureate score of Higher Level English A1 or A2 Certificate, grade of 4 or higher; Freshman English Composition Course score of "C" grade or higher (equivalent to IUPUI W131) from a regionally accredited U.S. University.
