The Department of Curriculum and Instruction prepares prospective teachers committed to ethical instruction and disciplinary expertise who advance the intellectual and social conditions of all learners and prepares researchers and educational leaders for careers in university settings and in any number of government and precollege school settings. The Department of Curriculum and Instruction is comprised of programs in early childhood/elementary education and secondary curriculum, teaching, and learning. Degrees are listed and certifications that can be obtained are listed below each degree.
Students who join our Educational Specialist programs are usually already in leadership positions in their schools and are seeking to enhance their disciplinary and pedagogical knowledge, as well as their capacity to bring about affirmative school change. Through our programs they will learn to plan and create differentiated experiences and programs based on disciplinary content, cutting edge research, and professional standards in order to engage diverse 6th through 12th grade school populations in rigorous and enjoyable learning. Our students engage in original, empirical research, and when they graduate, they often become disciplinary coaches or curriculum specialists for their schools or districts.
All of our programs include 12 hours of graduate level work in the discipline, as well as advanced work in curriculum and instruction.

English Language Requirements: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): The minimum score for admission to a degree program or for non-degree admission is 79 on the internet-based TOEFL (iBT). International English Language Testing System (IELTS): The minimum score for admission to a degree program or for non-degree admission is 6.5. Pearson Test of English (PTE): The minimum score of admission to a degree program or for non-degree admission is 59.
