The Master of Laws by Research requires completion of an original piece of research, similar to that required for a PhD but on a more modest scale. As with other research degrees, work is undertaken under supervision of experts in a chosen research area that enables development of original insights and critical research skills, in a supportive and stimulating environment.
Program structure
The Master of Laws by Research program requires a minimum of three semesters full-time study and the preparation of a thesis. The length of the Master of Laws by Research thesis must be approximately 60,000 words (including footnotes). Two examiners will be appointed by the Faculty Higher Degree Committee to examine the thesis. Students are required to attend Annual Progress Reviews. Progress reviews provide an opportunity for the student, his or her supervisors and the Law School to review how the research has progressed either since the commencement of the student’s candidature or their last review. They also provide a forum to review all aspects of the student's candidature, to develop a plan of action for the next review and to identify and respond to any impediments towards progress and the timely completion of the program.
