At The University of New Mexico College of Nursing, we educate to stabilize and improve the health of adult patients. Providing acute care for those populations with life experience. As an independent practitioner you will have the skills to address health and health equity needs of the state’s most vulnerable when they need you most.
You will be able to:
- Independently perform comprehensive health assessments.
- Order and interpret the full spectrum of diagnostic tests and procedures.
- Use a differential diagnosis to reach a medical diagnosis.
- Order, provide and evaluate outcomes of interventions.

With a mix of online classes and onsite simulation experiences, the AG-ACNP program is designed for you. You will learn to work collaboratively with other health care professionals to stabilize and improve the health of their patients. Clinical experiences help you apply what you have learned into practice. All while gaining skills that help you be an effective nurse practitioner.
You Will Be Prepared.
Completing the Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Program prepares you to:
- Provide a full scope of care utilizing both independent and collaborative approaches to the adult/gerontology population, including management of acute, critical and/or complex chronic health problems, health promotion, disease prevention, and support for transitional and end-of-life needs
- Integrate ethical principles in decision-making and evaluation of care related to the adult/gerontology population with acute, critical and/or complex chronic health problems
- Coordinate health care through interdisciplinary collaboration with members of the health care team
- Empower and motivate the adult/gerontology population and families to be full participants in their own health care
- Advocate for systems and policies that reduce health disparities, facilitate access to care and address cultural diversity and rural populations
- Assume professional responsibility for maintaining and advancing clinical practice competencies
- Participate in quality assurance and evaluation of health care delivery
- Use and articulate evidence-based research as the basis for practice
- Contribute to existing knowledge through participation in research
- Disseminate evidence to the adult/gerontology population and professionals throughout multiple modalities

Minimum of a 3.0 grade point average (GPA) on a U.S. 4.0 scale or comparable grade point average in upper-division (junior and senior level) university course work and in any graduate work already completed. TOEFL (internet-based) 79, TOEFL (paper-based) 550, IELTS 6.5, Pearson Test of English 53.
