The graduate programs offered in the department are designed to prepare graduates for professional engineering work in private industry or governmental laboratories or for teaching/research positions. The focus is on the fundamental concepts in the selected research area, with elective and supporting work to complete the study program.
Our programs provide excellent prospects for investigation and for close association among people whose common goal is to broaden the boundaries of their profession.
Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering (MSME)
- Plan I (Thesis)
- Plan II (Non-Thesis)
- Plan III (coursework only)
With a degree in Mechanical Engineering from UNM, students are ready to:
- Work in robotics, manufacturing, aerospace, biotech, and more
- Develop alternative energy resources
- Design aircraft and automotive vehicles
- Conduct atmospheric research
Concentrations: Entrepreneurship and Technology Management; Manufacturing Engineering; Space Systems Engineering.
A minimum of 24 credit hours of 500-level credit is required for all students pursuing the Master of Science (M.S.) in Mechanical Engineering degree program.
Plan I (Thesis) This degree plan requires 31 credit hours. Six (6) credit hours (ME 599) are required for a thesis. A seminar course must be taken for two semesters.
Plan II (Non-Thesis) This degree plan requires 34 credit hours. Three (3) credit hours (ME 559) are required for a project. A seminar course must be taken for two semesters.
Plan III (Course Work Only) This degree plan requires 34 credit hours of regular course work. A seminar course must be taken for two semesters.

TOEFL (internet-based) 79, TOEFL (paper-based) 550, IELTS 6.5, Pearson Test of English 53.
