Our MA in Philosophy and Mental Health gives you a better understanding of psychiatry, and mental health care more broadly, as you analyse fundamental concepts.
The programme responds to a newly developing interdisciplinary field looking at conceptual and evaluative aspects of mental health care. It’s based on the Oxford Textbook of Philosophy and Psychiatry, co-authored by the course leader.

- You’ll critically examine assumptions that drive the mental health care agenda and develop analytic and argumentative skills to inform your practice.
- Mental health raises conceptual as well as empirical difficulties and you’ll study key themes.
- You’ll examine the role of values in diagnosis, the validity or objectivity of taxonomy and the central relationship of mind and brain.
Future careers
You’ll develop your analytical and argumentative skills with our MA in Philosophy and Mental Health. It will help inform your practice and, in some cases, could see you add to research being carried out in this newly developing field. Students can also exit with PGCert and PGDip awards.
