The disciplines of interior design influences the way humans work, live, learn, play and manage their health and wellness. As our built environments become ever more complex there is a need for visionary leaders and professionals who will positively shape the way people engage with and inhabit these interior built environments.
The post-professional Master of Interior Design (MINTD) program in the School of Architecture and Interior Design (SAID) at the University of Cincinnati (UC) trains and nurtures a new generation of leaders and professionals who will advance the development of specialized interior studies to ensure innovative and sustainable improvements in the health, safety, and wellness of various user groups. The program is two years in length for students with an accredited interior design bachelor's degree. It requires students to complete four academic semesters and one semester of structured graduate practicum work related to their research interests. The MINTD curriculum combines design, practice, and theory aimed to meet the discipline’s evolving demands for creative practitioners, innovative researchers, emerging scholars, and skillful educators.
The MINTD program at UC is also part of the International Masters of Interior Architectural Design (IMIAD) program, a consortium of post graduate interior design programs, which allows UC students to spend a semester abroad in one of our partner schools in Germany, Turkey, India and Switzerland.
The program seeks to promote leadership, collaboration, intellectual depth, flexibility, and innovation – elevating professional value and developing life-long meaningful, career-driven engagement for our graduates.
Success
People who are successful in the interior design field have visual and kinesthetic/tactile learning styles. Interior designers are creative, imaginative and artistic, as well as disciplined and highly organized. They enjoy putting things together. Combining technical knowledge (involving structural requirements, materials and products) with aesthetic vision, interior designers work with clients and other design professionals to develop design solutions that are safe, functional, attractive and meet the needs of the people using the space.
Successful interior designers must possess strong communication skills and be comfortable in meeting with many different types of people, as well as being attentive listeners. Interior designers must have excellent time- and project-management skills, and must understand business planning. They need to know how to create informative and persuasive proposals and maintain good client relationships.
Career
Graduates of the Master of Interior Design program will be qualified to secure positions within interior design and architectural firms, academic institutions, governmental and non-governmental agencies. Some possible career paths include:
- Interior Designer
- University Professor
- Design Strategist
- Space and Facilities Planner
- Design Researcher and Analyst
- Historic Preservationist
