As a materials science and engineering graduate student, you’ll be working with and studying metals, glass, ceramics and biomaterials. This interdisciplinary master’s degree program is sponsored jointly by the ceramic engineering and metallurgical engineering departments, and does require a research component in one of the specialty areas.
In the areas of glass, ceramic, and biomaterials, the department carries out studies in:
- Electronic ceramics
- High temperature materials
- Structural ceramics
- Composites
- Ceramic processing
- Laser glasses
- Nuclear waste encapsulation glasses
In the area of metallurgical science, the department carries out studies in:
- Physical and mechanical metallurgy
- Extractive metallurgy
- Metals casting
- Joining and forming
- Manufacturing metallurgy
The total number of hours required for the M.S. in materials science and engineering is 30. The M.S. with thesis is oriented toward the completion of a research project and the degree requirements are 18 hours of course work and 12 hours of research. It is recommended that the student complete the core courses offered by the department including MS&E 6110, MS&E 6120, and MS&E 6130 which are graduate level crystallography, thermodynamics and kinetics. At least 6 hours of course work must be 6000-level courses. It is recommended that six additional hours be completed outside of the department. The other courses are chosen with the approval of the advisor.

為來自中國的學生設計 Admission as a regular graduate student is normally limited to those who ranked in the upper third of their baccalaureate graduating class or who have done quality work at the graduate level. For this requirement, a cumulative B average (3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale), or a B average (3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale) for the student’s last sixty credit hours of undergraduate coursework is considered equivalent to an upper one-third standing. English Language Requirement: TOEFL: 80; IELTS: 6.5; PTE: 58; Duolingo: 105.
