The materials science and engineering department offers a Bachelor of Science in metallurgical engineering. Students majoring in metallurgical engineering take a number of engineering management, ceramic engineering, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, math, science and humanities courses in addition to core metallurgical engineering curriculum courses, as referenced in the curriculum map.
As a metallurgical engineering student, you’ll learn about the extraction of metal from minerals, wastes, and recycled materials, the design of metallic materials that possess desired mechanical, physical and chemical properties, and the production of components from selected metals and alloys. You’ll be able to choose from a wide-range of specializations, including:
- Chemical metallurgy
- Extractive metallurgy
- Manufacturing metallurgy
- Physical and mechanical metallurgy
All undergraduates must have a significant experiential learning experience prior to graduation. These experiences may include co-op or internships, student design teams, undergraduate research, and others. The specific experience is documented during the senior design course (Met Eng 4096).
