This course series helps international students meet their personal, academic, and professional goals through intensive English language study. Our exceptional professors and state-of-the-art technology ensure a superior program of instruction.
Mission
The mission of the Intensive English Program is to assist adult international students in meeting their personal, academic, and professional goals through intensive English language study.
Goals
- To prepare international students for admission to Virginia Tech and other U.S. institutions through rigorous, progressive English language training.
- To develop students’ English language learning strategies and critical thinking skills to promote lifelong language development.
- To educate students about U.S. culture to prepare them for success in their academic and/or professional lives in the U.S.
- To increase diversity in the university's student population by enabling outstanding international candidates to meet English language admission requirements.
- To foster integration with and enrichment of the university community, the local community, and the global community by providing meaningful intercultural opportunities and experiences.
What you will learn
Our program provides classroom instruction in all language skill areas:
- Listening
- Speaking
- Reading
- Writing
- Pronunciation
We will also teach you academic study skills so you are ready to succeed at an American college or university. These skills include:
- Test-taking and note-taking skills
- Critical reading and writing
- Research and library skills

中國(guó)學(xué)生入學(xué)要求
為來(lái)自中國(guó)的學(xué)生設(shè)計(jì) Students must complete: 3 units of math (includes algebra I, geometry, and algebra II), 2 units of laboratory science (chosen from biology, chemistry or physics), additional academic units (foreign language is highly recommended). Some majors have other requirements, such as an additional year of advanced math or lab science. Most students who are selected for admission have completed more than the minimum requirements and have at least a B+ grade point average. Students taking the IELTS must obtain a score of at least 6.5, with no sub score below 6.5 to be considered for admission to Virginia Tech. Students taking the PTE must obtain a score of at least 53. Depending on the type of TOEFL used, Virginia Tech expects students to have scores of: Internet-based test: at least 80, with no section sub-score less than 16, Computer-based test: at least 233, Paper-based test: at least 550.
