Geoscientists are uniquely positioned to help solve the critical challenges that society faces today and will face in the future on our ever-changing planet. Water availability and quality, natural hazard mitigation, climate change, mineral and energy resources, and many large engineering projects all need the expertise of geoscientists. Geoscientists also develop our understanding of the history of life on Earth, of planetary science, mineral science, remote sensing, and a host of associated disciplines.
The role of the geoscientist has changed immeasurably in recent years and our recently revised undergraduate program reflects this. We offer an exciting new curriculum, designed to create 21st century geoscientists with skills, knowledge, and integrated problem-solving abilities. Our students learn in the classroom, the laboratory and the field, gaining invaluable experience for a wide variety of potential career paths. We offer opportunities for students to get involved in cutting-edge research, to study abroad, and to learn from internationally-known faculty. Because the scope of geosciences is so broad, our major is organized into a series of options, allowing you to focus on a specific sub-discipline as your interests develop throughout the degree.

為來(lái)自中國(guó)的學(xué)生設(shè)計(jì) Students must complete: 3 units of math (includes algebra I, geometry, and algebra II), 2 units of laboratory science (chosen from biology, chemistry or physics), additional academic units (foreign language is highly recommended). Some majors have other requirements, such as an additional year of advanced math or lab science. Most students who are selected for admission have completed more than the minimum requirements and have at least a B+ grade point average. Students taking the IELTS must obtain a score of at least 6.5, with no sub score below 6.5 to be considered for admission to Virginia Tech. Students taking the PTE must obtain a score of at least 53. Depending on the type of TOEFL used, Virginia Tech expects students to have scores of: Internet-based test: at least 80, with no section sub-score less than 16, Computer-based test: at least 233, Paper-based test: at least 550.
