Course learning outcomes
The James Cook University Bachelor of Speech Pathology (Honours) will prepare graduates to meet the Competency-Based Occupational Standards (CBOS: 2011) for speech pathology, as defined by Speech Pathology Australia.
On successful completion of the Bachelor of Speech Pathology (Honours), graduates will be able to:
- Integrate and adapt a coherent and advanced body of theoretical knowledge and technical competencies in diverse contexts as an entry level speech pathologist.
- Apply professional and ethical frameworks and standards, including the Speech Pathology Australia Code of Ethics and Competency-based Occupational Standards – Speech Pathology, and underlying principles and concepts, to inform responsible and accountable professional behaviours.
- Retrieve, critically evaluate and apply established and evolving evidence and concepts to advanced speech pathology and inter-professional practice.
- Demonstrate advanced oral and written English language and numerical skills that enable clear, coherent, and appropriate communication of theoretical and therapy concepts, treatment options, and professional decisions, with clients, families, communities, and other professionals.
- Reflect on and apply knowledge and skills to demonstrate autonomy, well-developed judgement, adaptability, and responsibility in speech pathology practice.
- Provide responsive, sensitive, and effective speech pathology practice to all clients, specifically including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, other culturally and linguistically diverse populations, and people residing in tropical, rural, and remote locations.
- Deliver, facilitate, and evaluate safe, sustainable, and effective client-centred speech pathology practice including preventative, educational, and promotional programs in collaboration with client groups and other professionals.
- Formulate, implement, and evaluate speech pathology management for people with communication and swallowing needs across the lifespan.
- Apply knowledge of research principles and methods to plan, execute, and disseminate project work and/or a piece of research and scholarship with some independence.
